How to Choose a Career?
Choosing a career, in reality, is a progression of small steps that add up eventually over some time; ultimately to that one big decision.
Some years back there were only standard careers available that focused only on the money-earning part and stability in one’s life. The good news is today there are a plethora of career options available and selecting a career is not simply based on a handful of options. There are various psychometric tests also available for the same.
However, along with the options also comes the challenging part, and that is of actually choosing a career from a long-term perspective. As a child, teenager, and also as a parent, it is imperative to choose the right career path for oneself and your child.
We at DMIT counselling in Pune are here to give you some pointers on the same and make this arduous task easier for you.
There are 3 key points to consider here-
- All Humans on this earth come into this world with some inborn talent.
- The second perspective to consider is all humans can learn a particular skill or gain a specific talent.
- Third, other factors can influence a person’s decision. E.g. geographic, cultural, and socio-economic.
Now all the above factors are categorized into-
- Inborn talent or Natural Talent
- Acquired Talent
- Influenced talent
Inborn Talent-
As a child, did you fancy applying make up? Or playing the piano? Or you have some tremendous orator skills? Do you like helping your mother preparing sumptuous dishes or like creating structures out of Lego blocks.
We can see a hidden talent here! The above inborn talents can correspond to successful vocations from a Make-up artist, a musician, a news anchor, a chef, or an interior designer or architect.
If you are born with any of the above talents, it is up to you and your parents to identify and nurture them. If you like what you do, there is simply no end to what you can achieve in your career.
Acquired Talent-
Do you remember going to a specific hobby class when you were a child? Your parents probably enrolled you there as you have certain specific traits which can be a potential career option. These are called the ‘acquired talent’.
Or you already have an established career? Today’s the needs of organizations have changed. Now it is all about unique skills rather than a single skill. Therefore, there are probably numerous programs held in companies and organizations for talent acquisition purposes to develop robust skill development in employees.
Influenced Talent-
Normally when you think of career choices, elements such as aptitude, likes, interests, salary are taken into consideration. But there is another branch that is probably unexplored and that talent influenced. Some influenced talent is based on the below factors-
- Life roles- We play multiple roles in our life. That of a brother, sister, daughter. Life factors and situations do have prominent importance in our career decisions. E.g. – there are cases where children have lost a closer one because of the unavailability of a good doctor or lack of expert opinion. Such life experiences can lead one to take career decisions to become a doctor, nurse, counselor, or any other health professional.
- Previous experiences- Were you a good theatre artist in school or college days? Did you enjoy giving speeches in school? Such previous experiences can lead to career decisions in the long term.
- Cultural Factors- Racial and ethnic backgrounds can influence a person’s career decision-making capacity. Multi-cultural counseling has emerged as a specialized field and these various factors are now taken into consideration while deciding on a career path.
- Gender- One of the most influenced factors the world over his gender-specific careers. While it is still to some extent a predominant factor, the mindset is now slowly changing. Right from woman drivers, to male make-up artists, there is a marked and refreshing shift in gender-specific roles.
While choosing a career, it should be remembered that each individual is born differently with different interests, personality types, traits, values, and interests. While choosing a career, there should be a holistic assessment and not just based on what you think or what others think. When you find a job, there should be a perfect balance of your liking, long-term goals, growth, and eventually the remuneration too.
